In the late 1960´s Samuel L. Lewis (1896 – 1971) initiated the Dances of Universal Peace. Inspired by his contact and spiritual apprenticeship with Hazraf Inayat Khan and Ruth St. Denis he began to envision and create these Dances as a dynamic method to promote “Peace through Arts”.
Starting with about 50 dances there are now more than 500 from a diversity of spiritual traditions and cultures from all over the world.
Sacred dance is as old as humankind. It brought and brings together people to celebrate seasonal ceremony, life and life passages. Sacred Dance brings us in touch with our spiritual essence within ourselves and others by creating an integrated experience of body, spirit and soul. It facilitates sacred space in which we get in touch with other spiritual traditions thus creating tolerance, understanding, community, and peace.
The elements, words and chants are easy to learn. Empathetic and highly motivated dance leaders and musicians guide us through the ceremony, teaching us the songs and the movements. Our focus is on participating, not presenting.
Dances of Universal Peace is an internationally operating network linking the different dance circles around the globe. I want to encourage you to visit them at www.dancesofuniversalpeace.org. There you will find more detailed information, and if you want to, a group near to where you live, and how to participate.
Love, light,
and peace
