So how I come to be here?, and doing what I am doing?

I began to walk my spiritual (non religious) path after realising that there was more to life than acquiring material possessions, career, money and status etc. I realised that although there is nothing wrong with these things, they did not bring true inner peace and happiness. I had all of these things, though after going through a challenging time in my life, something began to change in me, I began to open up to another possibility. Initially I was drawn to the Eastern wisdom traditions to look for answers to my questions and to find inspiration.

I began studying Buddhism first of all. The teachings of Buddha actually made a lot of sense to me. They presented a view of reality that resonated with what I experiencing. They taught that almost all of our time is spent trying to find happiness outside of ourselves, when true happiness comes from making peace with our own mind. I also liked the simple approach and that I didn’t have to “believe” in anything. I liked it that I was encouraged to test the teachings and meditation practices within my own experience and life.

As it made more sense to me that anything else, I was inspired to go deeper into my Buddhist studies and practices, and so I went to live in a meditation community in France. Here I was able to study and practice more intensively with some inspiring teachers who came to visit the centre from all over the world. I was encouraged to engage in daily studies and progressively longer periods of meditation practice and I opened up to the idea of a path of selfless service (Mahayana). While living there I began to put all these teachings into practice in my daily life. I thought this was equally as important as studying and meditation. I worked there as a cook in the community kitchen, this for me was the perfect place to practice. I loved working in the kitchen. It was here where I learnt the importance of lovingly preparing and sharing good home cooked food.

I learnt a lot about myself during my time in the community and in the kitchen. This was not always easy, in fact at times I found it very hard indeed. Though deeper down I knew the challenges and difficulties I was facing were the necessary lessons I needed on my path, and this was humbling for me. After a year and a half of living in the community, I sensed that my time there was coming to an end. I left with a wealth of experiences, teachings and practices, that I think I am still integrating to this day. And although I had (and still have) utmost respect for the Buddhist teachings, it didn’t feel true for me to put myself into a box of “being a Buddhist”. I felt I wanted to connect with a path that is open to all beliefs and approaches, and I was sensing that for me, the path was more about simply being a more conscious human being living on this planet.

I was not really interested in yoga at this time, partly because one of my Buddhist teachers had said that yoga had lost it’s spiritual depth and had become more of a “New age exercise fad”. However I was still curious as to what it had to offer. Sometimes on retreats we would meditate for up to 8 or 9 hours in a day, and I thought that it would be helpful to engage in some kind of regular body discipline to balance all this out.. I had practiced martial arts in the past, though after a rather painful knee injury, I had decided that I wanted a more gentle body practice, something that I could hopefully practice into my old age.

So I began learning a few yoga asanas (postures). I found that they helped me to sit more comfortably in meditation posture for longer, which was great. I began studying some of the yoga texts too and found that contrary to the vibe I had got from my Buddhist teacher about yoga, what I was studying (Hatha Yoga Pradipika/ Patanjali Yoga Sutras) seemed to be a very thorough and precise teaching, and was actually very similar to what I had studied in Buddhism. Though I thought somehow the non-religious- yogic approach could probably be more easily accessible to more people, and equally profound. I recognised that what most people thought of as yoga (as I did at the time), was actually the yoga asana (postures). I soon realised that this actually only makes up one aspect of the Yogic path. Yoga being a path to achieve not only good physical and psychological health but also to experience the highest states of human awareness, happiness and inner peace. I began integrating some yoga asanas with my daily meditations. I also attended a weekly class, and soon I couldn’t imagine doing one without the other as, to me, they went hand in hand.

I was aware how the practice of yoga and meditation were gradually changing my perceptions and awareness, and this awareness was naturally flowing into my everyday life. I even began to wonder how yoga and meditation (collective spiritual evolution) was having an effect on the planet as a whole?

While I was studying at Manchester University I wrote a dissertation on sustainable living. For part of this study I researched into the current state of the environment of our planet, and the impact of our human activity... The scientific statistics were pretty grim... If we continued at the same rates of consumption, pollution and growth in population it was not looking at all good for us humans...

Though at this time I learnt something very interesting in a book written by Thom Hartman (The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight). In his book he said that that although we are facing a very real crisis, there was also very real hope.

What he was saying was that for deep and lasting global transformation to take place it was necessary to have an approach to sustainable living that combined both practical down to earth methods combined with a deepening spiritual awareness of life.

This is what really began to bring everything together for me on my path.
co-creating a sustainable future for our planet and waking up to our true peaceful nature I saw were so intimately connected.
Describe your work and what it means to you:
An integrated approach to spirituality and ecology informed and continues to inform my daily practice and studies.

I went on to further my studies of yoga and meditation, energy healing, advaita vedanta, and also group dynamics/process work with teachers in UK, India, USA, Canada and then again in France. This all helped to develop a holistic and integrated approach to yoga, meditation and to the spiritual path. I also completed my PDC (Permaculture Design Course) which for me was a very practical way to integrate spiritual life and live harmoniously with the earth.

It seemed inevitable and natural that one day I would start sharing with others what I had studied and learnt from my teachers, and so I decided to take a yoga teacher training course, qualifying in October 2007.

I taught within a yoga organisation for 2 years, which helped me to get a good foundation and experience in teaching. Though as time went on I began to realise that I wasn’t really able to offer the full range of what I had studied and practised and still fit within the agreed constraints of the organisation I was teaching in (as much as it was a good organisation).

So after some deep soul searching I knew that if I was going to continue to share these teachings I had to be true to my heart. I also wanted to be 100% sure that what I was sharing was of genuine benefit to all life and free from dogma. And so honouring my inner voice I began sharing the yogic path, teachings and practices inspired from the best of what my teachers had taught me. I shared this in a way I saw as relevant to the times we are living, integrated with everyday life and from benefits I had experienced myself within my own life and practice. This approach developed over time through on going dialogue with friends, students, teachers and fellow yogis and continues to develop as together we explore what works best in our lives, in our practice and on our paths.

This approach is now known as Kalagiya Integral Yoga. and is an ongoing, evolving and co creative process..

And as they say the rest is history really…!

Phew, well I hope that paints a bit of a picture as to how I come to be doing what I am doing now.

And back to today. We are now just in the process of buying the Orange Tree relaxation Centre, where we have been running our retreats for nearly 2 years now. I will be living there full time, and hopefully putting into practice a bit more of what I have learned, and continue to learn on this continually unfolding journey!

Hope to meet you soon!

Use every letter you write, every conversation you have, every meeting you attend, to express your fundamental beliefs and dreams. Affirm to others the vision of the world you want. You are a free, immensely powerful source of life and goodness. Affirm it. Spread it. Radiate it. Think day and night about it and you will see a miracle happen: the greatness of our own life. --Robert Muller
