The key is 'empathy' but not sympathy. Don't take on others problems. Be there for them if necessary with a shoulder some practical help but never be a 'crutch'. At some point that crutch has to be taken away and then they fall again, or you end up feeling used or guilty. It's always best to let a person work out how to fix their own problems in their own way. Just lend an ear, a helping hand but don't take it all on board.
